Using RFID Tags And ReadersProduct Overview
The SparkFun RFID Reader Breakout takes the frustration out of working with non-standard pin spacing common on ID Innovations RFID reader modules. By converting the 2mm pins on the ID-3LA, ID-12LA, or ID-20LA reader modules into standard 0.1-inch headers, this board makes it incredibly simple to integrate low-frequency RFID tracking directly into a breadboard or custom prototyping layout.
While most ID Innovations modules have an internal antenna, ID-3XX modules will likely require an external antenna to function. Users should consult with the module's datasheet before purchasing.
Breadboard-Friendly RFID
To ensure your hardware stays safe and your layout remains clean, this breakout provides a few key physical advantages for your project:
- Clean Footprint: The board is designed to fit perfectly flush underneath the ID-12LA for a highly compact profile, while still functioning without issue alongside the larger ID-20LA.
- Complete Access: Every single pin from the RFID reader is broken out. Period. This gives you full access to VCC, READ, D0, D1, FORM, TIR, CP, both ANTs, RES, and GND.
- Secure Mounting: Four half-mounting holes are provided along the edges to securely fasten the board to your enclosure or testing rig.
While you can solder your reader directly to the board, ID Innovations modules can be highly sensitive to heat! We highly recommend using 2mm sockets instead of soldering a module directly to the board to protect your hardware and allow easy module swapping.
Taking the time to convert these modules to a breadboard-friendly format up front saves you from dealing with loose wires and unstable connections later. This breakout provides a practical solution for getting your RFID project up and running quickly and securely.
