Product Overview

Have you ever wanted to control something powerful, or have you ever needed to turn a high-power device on or off from your Arduino or another low-powered microcontroller? The SparkFun Qwiic Single Relay provides you with the easiest-to-use relay yet. The Single Relay board can handle up to 5.5A at 240VAC for long periods and lets you control large power loads with simple I2C commands. Utilizing our handy Qwiic Connect System and on-board screw terminals, no soldering is required to connect it to the rest of your system!

Scalable I2C Control

The Qwiic Relay comes with a default I2C address of 0x18 but can be changed with a simple command, allowing you to control over 100 Qwiic Relays on a single bus (toggling lots of relays on a 3.3V bus can cause voltage spikes, so an external power supply will be required)! In addition, there is an address jumper on the back of the board. Closing this jumper with solder will change the address to 0x19. Please be aware that a multiplexer like the Qwiic Mux Breakout would be required to communicate with multiple relays on the same address.

Built-In Safety Upgrades

Switching AC loads requires serious precautions, so we designed this PCB with several hardware upgrades to keep your microcontroller safe during operation:

  • Enhanced Ground Isolation: We increased the isolation gap between the high-voltage load and the low-voltage control circuits.
  • Air-Gap Protection: A physical air-gap around the common pin prevents electrical arcing.
  • Increased Current Capacity: The traces running between the relay and the NC/NO/COM terminals are doubled to safely handle the maximum 5.5A current.

The Qwiic Single Relay is great for switching loads like motors, batteries, solenoids, pumps, and more! Just keep in mind that controlling high voltage (110/220VAC) requires certain precautions. If you are not comfortable working directly with high-voltage AC, please consider using the IoT Power Relay. While it's not I2C supported, it contains complete shielding to prevent accidental shock and serves as an excellent starting point for learning about relay power accessories before moving up to this bare-board solution.
