The Special Edition SIK

Or, what happens when you literally break the mold.

Currently you'll be seeing a slightly different version of the SIK for sale on our website.

We recently moved our injection mold for SIK cases over from China to Longmont, CO, in order to provide a quicker supply of cases when we are low on stock. Unfortunately, after we made the transition, we found our mold had begun to break and would need repair. Since the SIK is one of our best-selling products, and injection mold repair is a long process, this means we will not have cases to fulfill orders for several weeks. We have introduced the Special Edition SIK at a discounted price as a temporary solution.

This is the same SIK you know and love, just in one of our classic red boxes. Once we have our injection mold repaired, we will be sending out a new case to everyone who purchases the Special Edition SIK at no added cost to you.

Thus concludes today's Public Service Announcement. Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to fewer and fewer DOH's in the future!

And this right here is why I'm willing to spend a few extra coin to buy things from SparkFun: They'll Make It Right™ even when the problem comes from no direct fault of their own.

Great solution! Can the mold be brazed back together? I realize a mold is a lot of upfront cost, but brazing is relatively cheap and are nowhere near the cost of entry that welding has?

  • It's been four months. The page said "Tentatively by March". Any updates on when these will be shipped?

We've had broken molds, fixed molds, suppliers machines have gone down, they've found more problems with the molds... We've had quite a few tentative dates and are still working to get these it. Right now we are still looking at tentatively March, but until we have them in the building we're not promising anything.

  • Reshoring!
