The Source Show presents Bay Area Maker Faire 2011

Favorited Favorite 0

A few weeks ago, we posted a video of our trip out to Maker Faire Bay Area back in May. It was an awesome experience and video really doesn't do it justice - you have to attend Maker Faire to see what it's really all about. With that said, The Source Show made a very nice video with some great footage and interviews. Check it out:

As you can see, Maker Faire is a pretty cool event with tons to see. The next big Maker Faire is in Detroit on July 30 and 31 (we won't have a full contingent, but you might catch Chris and Todd from IT wandering around), with Maker Faire New York coming up on September 17 and 18. If you can make it out to either one, we highly recommend it! Cheers!

When do we get to see all the details on the Sparkfun vending machine???

  • Is it me, or is the green text behind their logo thing strikingly similar to a screen saver on my ubuntu distro??? ;-)

I saw one of those tesla coil music generators at my college's undergraduate research conference (albeit the one at my college was merely a 2-inch sparkgap). Hard to see any practically out of such a device....but it's still a pretty cool concept and makes for a good show. Make sure if you are near one of these that there is good ventilation! The sparks produce ozone.

I think the trouble with Maker Faires is that they're held in cities that are already juiced up about DIY and home technology. It's the old "preaching to the choir" mentality.
Where they should really be holding Maker Faires is in cities like Tulsa, Oklahoma; Wichita, Kansas, and other Bible-belt cities and states where their kids are falling behind in science and mathematics.
Perhaps if we can bring the joys and magic of math, science, and engineering to those on the fringes we may ignite a renaissance in those areas long plagued by anti-science dogmatism.

Nothing ever happens in New England. We do have the NY Faire (SFE: come!), though. I have an idea for us in the east. Once Sparkfun gets enough profit, they can open a New York location!!!! Then we can have NY AVC, classes, etc. Think about it.

      Sparkfun is everywhere.

Haha, they have enough profit to open up an NYC location now. I think they like where they are.

Isn't Adafruit in NYC? Maybe convince them to have some classes.
