New Internet of Things (IoT) Video Series: The Fellowship of the Things!

Revealing our new IoT project series with the (connected) world.

If you've been around for...at least a couple days, you know that we love making videos. With that, we're excited to share the first installment of our new video series: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE THINGS. This new series follows our team of Creative Engineers as they build connected "internet of things" (IoT) projects. IoT is a broad category that is rapidly becoming more popular in the world of electronics – for those unfamiliar, IoT covers wirelessly-connected devices that are often used for home automation, health care, smart grids or wearables, to name just a few examples. We're so excited about IoT that we even built a special apartment inside SparkFun HQ to showcase all our projects, and over the course of the series (around one project a month), we'll be filling the apartment to the brim with all manner of connected schemes.

If you're interested in delving into the world of IoT or connected devices and projects, this series is a great way to get ideas! Got an idea of something we could build for the IoT apartment? Hit us up in the comments, and enjoy the first episode!

it sending a text would be a better 3rd factor for something you have.

  • Now might be a good time to pay homage to one of the unsung pioneers and point out that while "IoT" may be a new catch phrase, it's hardly a new idea... one of the most famous Internet of Things almost before there was an Internet was Paul Haas' Wave to the Cats, Hot Tub Status and Refigerator with can of Diet Coke Status (with description of the build) all the way back to at least 1995 - 1997! ;)

By the way, wonderful video! Cant wait to see whats next! (Hows about Wave to the dogs? :) )

It goes back farther than that. The CMU coke machine reported it status a long time ago. https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~coke/history_long.txt

  • The mantrap is a cool idea, but....

In the name of safety and probably legality, you should make it so that if the person inside fails to authenticate it takes the picture and then automagically kicks them to the outside. This of course assumes a real world setup. The problem I see with the setup as is, is the case where no one gets or responds to the tweet/email/insert communication here. How does the person inside get out?

Overall a great concept, just needs a few tweaks.

Those electric deadbolts have a knob on the inside. Can't they just turn it and open the deadbolt like a normal door? So no one is ever really trapped inside.

    • It is true that, due to fire code, automated mantraps are required to allow egress from to the non-secure area...

If you have a guard working the mantrap, however, you can lock someone in until they've been authorized!

    • Oh, yes. There is no way it is a complete system. It's more of an "inspiration project" to get people started. I would never put one of these in my own home ;)

      • How about this? Make it so that the trapped person has to scan his/her thumbprint to get out. Combined with a photo this would be an almost perfect way to log evidence for an attempted entry, if such evidence were needed in court.

and as for putting one in my home....I would :D

Thanks for putting up great ideas like this and all the other learning materials and such. I am always inspired by the things I learn here.

With these videos, can you post the code for your example? It would be a nice springboard.

I'd like to see an automated beverage dispenser. After a long day at work, I like to come home and quench my thirst. It's frustrating to have to leave my desk to go to the fridge for another cool drink. If you give me the items then I'll send you a BOM and I'll build one for ya.

    :)

    Thank you
