Lets build something out of reused parts!
One of the best ways to help out the environment is to reuse as many things as you can. This helps reduce the amount of things that ultimately end up in landfills (which is a good thing!). Reusing parts can be as simple as using a plastic/glass bottle as your new water container, making a vase or plant pot out of a cut milk carton, or, if you are like us here at SparkFun, making awesome sculptures out of scrap or broken parts!
There is a world of possibilities for what can be repurposed, and, here at SparkFun, we are all about possibilities - and helping the environment while we are at it! We want to see what you can reuse and repurpose!
So build us something, anything! It can be a working piece of circuitry, or a wonderful piece of art, or both! It should be made out of at least 75% reused parts (though we encourage 100%!). Relate it to SparkFun, (with a sticker, use one of our boxes, or paint our logo on it!) and enter it to win! Here's how:
- Send your photos or videos to sustainability_contest@sparkfun.com.
- Submissions will be accepted until Friday August 1st.
- The winner will receive $100 in SparkFun credit!

I really hope you guys plan on doing this again, because I'm right in the middle of a huge project heavily involved in salvaging materials for. Even after getting all I need, it's still going to take a long time to assemble and program. I'm not going to say what it is cause I want to surprise at least one person, but I will say that it moves.
I do intend on having this contest again in the future, we will probably change it up, but if you build something awesome out of reused parts, I always want to see! So even after the 1st send your stuff to sustainability_contest@sparkfun.com! Or keep it and submit it to our future contests.
Whatever became of the April Fools contest result for the "one project from the original announcement’s comments" that you guys were going to build and announce? I only ask because I thought I had a decent idea that had a chance and if I've got a horse in the race (however slow it may be), that's enough to keep me hopeful! I know Emcee Grady was the one that was heading that up from all the posts that were made.

Bingo! That's what I've been curious about. It's still only a few weeks compared to how many in a year but it's been a while without any word about it so I figured I would just check to see if that fell by the wayside!
I wish we had a better excuse - but it comes down to we've been real busy. Our creative technologist has picked out a winning project, but hasn't gotten down to building it yet. It's still a thing and it will happen, I promise.
No problem! Good to hear it's still happening regardless of the late date as I know how things get when it's busy. Silly projects are always fun to see.
I have been harvesting parts from discarded computers, printers, fax machines, cameras, and the like, for years. Small DC and stepper motors I use with some regularity, and I pull switches, resistors, caps, and whatever else I need off of old PCBs as often as possible. I've also started adding googley eyes and resistor tails to old chips, because googley eyes make everything better. But now I might actually have to apply myself, and make something artistic and useful!
Thanks for the picture of those adorable chip creatures. Now I have a reason to buy ridiculous amounts of googly eyes online.
It is hilarious the similarity between our two "Old computer parts drawers". Sam size and everything.
